On a gloriously sunny afternoon on Saturday, 1st June 2024, the much-anticipated launch of “A Sea Grey House – A History of Renvyle House” by Dr. J.A. Lidwill took place at Books at One in Letterfrack. The event brought together a delightful mix of literary enthusiasts, history buffs, and community members, all eager to celebrate this addition to the chronicles of Renvyle House.

The event commenced with a warm welcome from Mary Ruddy, owner of Books at One and her team at the bookshop, who had set up the venue beautifully for the occasion. Clear blue skies and warm sunshine provided a perfect backdrop for hosting the event outdoors in the garden which created an inviting and festive atmosphere.

The publisher, Joe Boske (Little Gull Publishing), took to the podium first, sharing insights into the publishing journey of “A Sea-Grey House.” He discussed the collaboration on this book along with designer Paul Callanan and owner of Renvyle House Hotel, John Coyle and highlighted the meticulous research and dedication that Dr. Lidwill put into the book, painting a vivid picture of the storied past of Renvyle House.

Dr. Jerry Lidwill, the author, followed with a few heartfelt words. He expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported him throughout the writing process, both past and present, whose stories and experiences enriched the narrative. Dr. Lidwill’s speech was a touching tribute to the living history encapsulated in the walls of Renvyle House, and his passion for preserving this heritage was evident.
Guest speaker Leo Hallissey, a notable figure in the community, also shared his reflections on the significance of Renvyle House in the local and broader historical context. His anecdotes and personal connections to the house brought an additional layer of depth to the event, reinforcing the book’s importance as a cultural and historical record.

Attending the launch was a lovely mix of people from the community, hotel employees from different eras, visitors to the area, local historians and avid readers. Their presence underscored the strong ties between Renvyle House and the community, making the launch not just a literary event, but a celebration of shared history and heritage.

As the formal proceedings concluded, guests mingled, exchanged stories, and enjoyed refreshments, all while browsing through copies of “A Sea Grey House.” It was an afternoon filled with connections and an appreciation for the history. Dr. Lidwill’s book promises to be a cherished addition to the libraries of those who hold Renvyle House dear, and its launch was a fitting tribute to its rich legacy.
